Provisioning Server CPU Utilization

Display Name Provisioning Server CPU Utilization
Description
Monitors Provisioning Server CPU utilization
Knowledge Article
Summary

This monitor checks the PVS Server CPU Utilization. In case the CPU Utilization is too high, a PVS Server might become unresponsive.

Alert is triggered only when CPU Utilization value is above threshold for specified number of consecutive samples (NumberOfSamples parameter).

Configuration

The following configuration parameters are customizable:

  • CriticalThreshold - Critical threshold value in percent. Default value is 97.

  • IntervalSeconds - The recurring interval of time in seconds in which the monitor is started (the default value is set to 300 seconds).

  • NumberOfSamples - Number of consecutive sample values considered before generating an alert. For example, set this parameter to 3 if alert should be generated only when CPU Utilization performance value is above threshold for 3 consecutive monitoring intervals.

  • WarningThreshold - Warning threshold value in percent. Default value is 90.

Causes

The server may be overloaded.

Resolutions

Check whether the CPU utilization on the server is high for longer periods of time. To view the recent history for CPU utilization, use the following performance view:

Provisioning Server Performance

Additional

Average CPU utilization peaks are okay as long as the long term average CPU utilization on the server is not above 80%. A long term CPU utilization of more than 80% typically indicates an overloaded server.

PVS Server Store Watcher

Server Store Free Space

Display Name Server Store Free Space
Description
Monitors the percentage of free space on a store from the server perspective.
Knowledge Article
Summary

Free disk space on the store is low.

Causes

The amount of free space on a store can become low under the following circumstances:

  • The number of vDisks on the store has increased.

  • Write cache path for vDisks is located on the store and its size is increasing.

The store size is checked individually from each of the servers that are configured to use this store.

Resolutions

Consider the following solutions to increase some free space:

  • Check whether you can increase space allocated to the store.

  • Check whether you can move or remove some content from the store.

To view the recent history for the store free space, use the following performance view:

Provisioning Server Store Performance

Additional

Low store free space means that you might not be able to create additional vDisks on this store. For vDisks that use cache on the server it also means that the target devices may have problems with the write cache.

The recurring interval of time in seconds in which to run the rule (the default value is set to 300 seconds). In general this parameter should not be changed. To trigger the alert at a different time from default, update NumberOfSamples parameter.

NumberOfSamples

The number of event occurrences before alert will be triggered (the default value is set to 3). For example, if alert must be triggered after 15 minutes, set it to 3 or set it to 4 if it must be triggered after 20 minutes. NumberOfSamples must not be set to a value less than 2.

AlertingThreshold

The value that defines the threshold to be used in the comparison (the default value is set to 70 percent.).

ConsolidationInterval

This value must be always set based on NumberOfSamples and IntervalSeconds parameters. Please see the formula below.

Formula for ConsolidationInterval:

ConsolidationInterval = ((NumberOfSamples - 1) * IntervalSeconds ) * 1.1

For example, to generate an alert only when monitored value is above threshold for 20 minutes (4 consecutive samples):

IntervalSeconds = 300 (5 minutes) NumberOfSamples = 4 ( 20 minutes / 5 minutes = 4) ConsolidationInterval = ((4 - 1) * 300) * 1.1 = 990
