Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops

Enlightened Data Transport

Enlightened Data Transport (EDT) is a Citrix-proprietary transport protocol built on top of User Datagram Protocol (UDP). It delivers a superior user experience on challenging long-haul connections while maintaining server scalability. EDT improves data throughput for all ICA® virtual channels on unreliable networks, providing a better and more consistent user experience.

When Adaptive Transport is enabled, EDT is the preferred protocol.

Things to know

EDT MTU Discovery

MTU Discovery allows EDT to automatically determine the Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) when establishing a session. Doing so prevents EDT packet fragmentation that might result in performance degradation or failure to establish a session.

MTU Discovery is enabled by default. If you need to disable it, see HDX features managed through the registry for details.

Note:

  • Session Reliability must be enabled for MTU Discovery to work.
  • MTU Discovery with Multi-Stream ICA is available with VDA versions 2209 and later.

EDT MTU Rediscovery

MTU Rediscovery allows EDT to automatically adjust the MTU for an active session if a lower MTU is detected after the initial connection, ensuring optimal performance and reliability.

MTU Rediscovery can be configured via Citrix policy using the following setting:

  • MTU Rediscovery:

    • Off: MTU Rediscovery is disabled.
    • Static: when a decrease in MTU is detected, the session’s MTU is set to 1200 for the remainder of the session.
    • Dynamic: when a decrease in MTU is detected in an active session, MTU discovery is trigerred to determine an optimal MTU for the connection.

By default, this setting is disabled.

Note:

  • Session Reliability must be enabled for MTU Rediscovery to work.
  • MTU Rediscovery requires Workspace app for Windows 2607 or later.
  • If you had previously configured MTU Rediscovery through the registry, you must remove the registry configuration to be able to configure MTU Rediscovery with the policy setting.
