Keyboard and Mouse
Keyboard and Mouse is where you set the keyboard language and functions, and configure mouse and touchpad settings.
Keyboard settings
These settings control the keyboard layout and how it behaves while typing:
| Setting | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Language | Dropdown | The keyboard layout, for example English (US, International). |
| Num Lock | Dropdown | Whether Num Lock is On, Off, or Auto at startup. |
| Delay | Slider | How long a key must be held before it starts repeating. |
| Speed | Slider | How fast a held key repeats. |
| Dead keys | Toggle | Enables dead keys, for typing combined characters as a key combination, for example ê or ô. |
| Console switch | Toggle | Allows switching to a virtual console with a keyboard shortcut. Changing this setting prompts you to log off to apply it. |
| Extended keys | Toggle | Enables multimedia and other keys with special functions. |
The Language list includes two Dvorak layouts: English (US, Dvorak) and English (UK, Dvorak).
Note:
For the Turkish language, two keyboard layout variants are available in the Language dropdown: Turkish (Q), the most common Turkish layout, and Turkish (F). Choose the variant that matches the layout you already use.
Mouse settings
These settings control the size and speed of the mouse pointer, and how the mouse buttons work:
| Setting | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Pointer size | Slider | The pointer size, from Normal to Largest. A larger pointer is easier to see. |
| Double-click speed | Slider | How fast two clicks must follow each other to count as a double-click. |
| Acceleration | Slider | How much the pointer speeds up with faster mouse movement. |
| Left-handed | Toggle | Swaps the primary and secondary mouse buttons for left-handed use. |
Note:
Earlier versions had a Show mouse pointer switch in the mouse settings. It is no longer on the device. Administrators can still hide the pointer, for example on an information board. In Scout Board, turn off Show mouse pointer under Keyboard and Mouse > Mouse in the device configuration. In the Scout Console, see Configuring mouse.
Touchpad settings
These settings control the touchpad and how it scrolls. They apply only to devices with a built-in touchpad:
| Setting | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Touchpad | Dropdown | Turns the touchpad On or Off, or sets it to Auto. |
| Classic scroll direction | Toggle | Sets which way the page moves when you scroll on the touchpad. |
The Classic scroll direction toggle has two settings:
- Off (default): natural scrolling. The page moves the same way as your fingers, as on macOS.
- On: classic scrolling. The page moves the opposite way, as on Windows.
For the other touchpad gestures, such as zooming a web page, see Touchpad gestures.
Setting values centrally
Scout and Scout Board have no dedicated settings for the pointer size or the scroll direction. To set them for several devices at once, or to select a Dvorak layout, use advanced file entries. For how to define an entry, see Advanced file entries.
All three keys are in the Screen section of /setup/terminal.ini:
| Key | Values | Description |
|---|---|---|
PointerSize |
24, 32, 48, 64, 96
|
The pointer size in pixels. 24 is Normal. 96 is Largest. |
ClassicScrollDirectionForTouchpad |
true, false
|
true: classic scrolling. false (default): natural. |
XkbLayout |
en_US_dvorak, gb_dvorak
|
The keyboard layout. These two values select a Dvorak layout. |
en_US_dvorak selects English (US, Dvorak). gb_dvorak selects English (UK, Dvorak).
Setting additional keyboard (XKB) options
Some keyboard layouts use a comma (,) as the decimal separator on the numeric keypad. To make it always produce a period (.) instead, or to apply other XKB options, add the option to the keyboard layout in the eLux® keyboard database.
Note:
Setting
XkbOptions=under[Screen]interminal.inihas no effect in eLux 7 and should not be used.
-
Edit the keyboard database file
/setup/elux/kbd.ini. -
In the section for the keyboard layout used on the device, set the
options=value. The following example sets the numeric keypad decimal key to a period for the German layout ([de]):[de] options=kpdl:dot <!--NeedCopy-->You can specify multiple options separated by commas, for example
options=kpdl:dot, compose:ralt. Set the option on the section that matches the layout the device actually uses. -
Deploy the modified
/setup/elux/kbd.inito the device through Scout (see Files configured for transfer), then restart the device so the file is in place at startup.
To confirm the option is active, run the following command on the device:
setxkbmap -query
<!--NeedCopy-->
The output lists the layout and its options, for example options: kpdl:dot.
Note:
If you later change the device’s keyboard layout, add the option to the new layout’s section in
kbd.inias well. An option set on one layout section does not apply to another.
