Profile Management

Configure the Folders to mirror and Exclusion policies

Note:

This article applies only to the file-based profile solution.

This article explains how to use the Folders to mirror and the Exclusion policies in Citrix Profile Management to optimize profile synchronization.

A transactional folder refers to a folder that contains interdependent files. Its integrity is essential during profile synchronization. By enabling the Folders to mirror policy, you can ensure proper processing of transactional folders. Folders added to this policy are synced between the user store and the local profile with their integrity preserved.

In Windows environments, many application folders in profiles are transactional. To optimize profile synchronization, combine the Folders to mirror policy with inclusion and exclusion policies, such as:

  • Inclusion policy: Directories to synchronize
  • Exclusion policies: Exclusion list - files, Exclusion list - directories, Enable default exclusion list - directories, and Logon exclusion check

The priority orders for the Folders to mirror policy and the exclusion policies vary based on the Citrix Profile Management version. Properly configuring these policies ensures accurate synchronization of transactional folders and prevents unnecessary data transfer.

Priority orders

The following sections provide priority orders and configuration examples for different versions of Citrix Profile Management:

Priority orders used by the user store writeback

The following table shows the priority orders that Citrix Profile Management uses to process user logoff and active writeback.

Version Priority order Consideration Solution
1912 or later Exclusion policies > Folders to mirror A mirrored folder isn’t synced if it or its parent folder is in the exclusion list. Add the mirrored folder to Directories to synchronize.
Earlier than 1912 Folders to mirror > Exclusion policies Unable to exclude unnecessary subfolders under mirrored folders. NA

Priority orders used by the logon exclusion check

The Logon exclusion check policy determines how exclusions are processed when excluded files and folders are found in the user store during logon. Its interaction with the Folders to mirror and the exclusion policies also varies by version:

Version Priority order Consideration Solution
2203 LTSR CU4 or 2311 or later Exclusion policies > Folders to mirror A mirrored folder isn’t synced if it or its parent folder is in the exclusion list. Add the mirrored folder to Directories to synchronize.
Earlier than 2203 LTSR CU4 or 2311 Folders to mirror > Exclusion policies Unable to exclude unnecessary subfolders under mirrored folders. NA

Configuration example for version 2203 LTSR CU4 or 2311 or later

To exclude AppData\Local while ensuring AppData\Local\Packages (a transactional folder for UWP app data) is mirrored:

  1. Add AppData\Local to Exclusion list - directories.
  2. Add AppData\Local\Packages to Directories to synchronize.
  3. Add AppData\Local\Packages to Folders to mirror.

How to upgrade

When upgrading Citrix Profile Management, review and adjust your policy settings to maintain profile synchronization efficiency. Different versions of Citrix Profile Management introduce changes to policy priorities that might require updates to your settings.

See the following sections for guidance based on your target version.

Upgrade to version 1912 or later

Follow these steps to verify policy settings after upgrading:

  1. Review the exclusion list and the mirrored folder list.
  2. If a folder is in Folders to mirror but excluded (or its parent folder is excluded), add it to Directories to synchronize.

Upgrade to version 2203 LTSR CU4 or 2311 or later

Follow these steps to verify policy settings after upgrading:

  1. Review the Logon exclusion check policy.
  2. If this policy is enabled and a folder in Folders to mirror is excluded, add it to Directories to synchronize.
